School hoop: Promising Bulldogs
The Berne-Knox-Westerlo basketball team has a pair of promising young guards in sophomore Justin Houck and freshman Zack Hilton.
Both of them turned in solid efforts Wednesday night (Jan. 15) when the Bulldogs fell behind big in the first half and then rallied to make a game of it in a 56-50 WAC loss at Mekeel Christian Academy.
Houck scored 12 of his season-high 14 points in the second half and snared nine rebounds. Hilton scored 13 points to go with a pair of steals.
Hilton turned in 20-point performances earlier in the season in wins against Middleburgh and Sharon Springs.
The Bulldogs trailed by 21 in the second quarter at Mekeel, 25-4, and Hilton scored their final seven points of the half as momentum began to sway their way. Houck notched nine points in the fourth quarter, including a buzzer-beating three to end the contest. He also had a three and a foul shot to start a 9-2 run earlier in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs cut into a 47-31 deficit.
Sophomore center Damonte White was one of Mekeel’s standouts with 11 points and six rebounds. Two other 10th-graders, Mike Mann and Alex Mulvey, scored eight points apiece.
