Rotterdam police warn of scam involving bogus grandchild in distress
ROTTERDAM Rotterdam police are reminding residents to be suspicious of anyone calling unexpectedly and requesting money, after residents reported receiving from people perpetrating a grandpa-grandson scam.
In the scam, a caller calls and identifies himself as the caller’s grandchild. When the resident responds with a name, the caller uses that name to further the scam.
The scheme then goes on with the caller claiming to need money to get out of jail in Mexico, and that the money should be sent via Western Union.
Police said the local would-be victims became suspicious and did not send money.
Police said residents should be wary of anyone calling unexpectedly and requesting money to be wired, especially to a foreign country.
