Man killed by car in front of Niskayuna church
NISKAYUNA A man who had just attended a Good Friday service was struck and killed by a car driven by a woman who had also just finished attending the service, police said.
Police said Gary Amell, 70, of Schenectady was struck about 1 p.m. by a car driven by 88-year-old Maria Rubonis of Niskayuna as he crossed Union Street in front of St. Kateri Takakwitha Church.
Rubonis was pulling out of the church’s parking lot and turned left onto Union Street but didn’t see Amell, who was in the mid-block crosswalk, police said. Amell was carrying a prayer book at the time; the book landed on the car’s windshield.
Witnesses called police and performed CPR on Amell until paramedics arrived. He was then taken by members of Niskayuna Fire District 1 to Albany Medical Center, where he died.
Rubonis was not injured. There was no alcohol involved, police said, and Rubonis was wearing her seatbelt.
No tickets were issued Friday, police said, but the accident remained under investigation.
Assisting Niskayuna police were Fire District 1 and the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department.
Union Street around the accident scene was closed for part of the afternoon as the investigation proceeded.
