Crash in Colonie leads to charges under Leandra’s Law
COLONIE A man impaired by drugs drove erratically through Guilderland and Colonie before crashing into a car and then running away on foot with children in his arms, police said.
Joseph M. Brennan Jr., 23, of Albany, was charged with two felonies under Leandra’s Law, in connection with the two young children in his car.
He was also charged with driving while impaired by drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and child endangerment, as well as numerous violations of Vehicle & Traffic Law.
The incident began around 9 p.m. Saturday, when Guilderland police tried to pull over a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Brennan. He fled on Interstate 87 and Guilderland police broke off their chase, they said.
Minutes later, the vehicle crashed into another car on Central Avenue, according to Colonie police.
Brennan took his car up onto the median in front of Colonie Center and then veered back into the road, where his car hit a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta driven eastbound by Palwinder Singh, 21, of Schenectady, Colonie police said.
The Jetta was pushed into the side of the Regal Cleaners at 1410 Central Ave.
Police said they found Brennan fleeing on foot while carrying two children.
The children, ages 1 and 3, were under his supervision at the time, they said, and had been passengers in his car.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Colonie Police Traffic Safety Unit at 783-2744 or Sgt. Eric Batcheldor of the Guilderland Police Department at 356-1501.
