Navy man hit by cab in Saratoga in good condition
SARATOGA SPRINGS Saratoga Springs police identified the man found unconscious early Saturday morning near the corner of Broadway and Lake Avenue.
Nilantonio Eschevarria-Diaz, 23, who is serving at the Navy’s West Milton submarine training facility, was hit by a Saratoga Taxi cab when he attempted to cross from the north to the south side of Lake Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.
Witnesses told police that Eschevarria-Diaz darted across two lanes of traffic and ran into the driver’s side of the moving taxi cab operated by John Nokes.
He hit his head and shoulders on the driver’s side windshield, breaking the windshield. He was then knocked off the cab, breaking the driver’s-side mirror, and landed on the road.
Police said Eschevarria-Diaz was unconscious and unresponsive after the accident.
He was taken to Saratoga Hospital and then airlifted to Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Lt. John Catone of the city Police Department said Eschevarria-Diaz was in good condition Monday at Albany Medical Center Hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.
Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in his decision to dart into the roadway. The investigation into the accident is continuing.
