Regional softball: Greenwich hangs on, 5-4
Defending state champion Greenwich held off St. Lawrence of Section X, 5-4, in the Class C regional softball championship game Wednesday at SUNY-Potsdam.
The Witches, who have won the last three Section II titles, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and were in front, 4-1, in the top of the fifth.
But St. Lawrence came back with a run in the fifth inning and two more in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting.
Kali Nolan had two hits, and Jasmine James contributed a two-run single for the 23-3 Witches, who take on Sandy Creek of Section III Saturday morning at 9 in the state semifinals at Morse Field.
Alexis Case and Sam Whitehouse chipped in with an RBI apiece.
“My kids stayed calm and cool and came up with some very clutch defense when we needed it,” said Greenwich coach Greg McGuirk.
St. Lawrence committed five errors.
Troy continued its impressive roll through postseason play with a 3-1 victory over Franklin Academy of Section X in the Class A regional championship game at SUNY-Potsdam.
The Flying Horses (23-2), who won their first Section II championship since 1987, take on Sayville of Section XI Saturday in the state semifinals at 9 a.m. at the Adirondack Sports Complex.
Troy scored two runs in the third inning and tacked on another in the fourth.
Franklin Academy scored a run in the third inning.
Hunter Levesque struck out eight and scattered six hits on the mound.
Kaitlin Designore ripped a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for Troy. Alina Germinerio plated the other run with a sacrifice fly.
In Class B, Section II Player of the Year Kayla Doty, bound for UConn next season, struck out 11 and scattered six hits to lift defending state champion Chatham over Saranac of Section VII, 8-3, at SUNY-Plattsburgh.
The unbeaten Panthers advanced to the state semifinals Saturday.
