Golf: Shaker's Jensen wins state championship
ITHACA Shaker High School senior Davis Jensen made three consecutive birdies on the back nine to take control, and went on to win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championship Monday on the Robert Trent Jones course at Cornell University.
Jensen, the son of Schuyler Meadows pro Steve Jensen, shot a two-over-par 73 Monday and finished with a two-day total of 147 to defeat New Hartford (Section III) freshman Alex Bard by three strokes.
Jensen, who will be playing at Division III Methodist College next year, birdied the 11th, 12th and 13th holes on his way to an even-par 36 on the back nine. He dropped a 40-foot putt to get his birdie on No. 12.
The victory gave Jensen an exemption for next month’s New York State Amateur, which will be played at Schuyler Meadows. He is also eligible to play in the Federation tournament Sunday at Bethpage.
Other Section II golfers competing at the states were Aaron Simone of Niskayuna (88-79-167, tied for 52nd), Calvin Beckwith of Saratoga Springs (82-88-170, tied for 59th), Josh Fonda of Gloversville (81-89-170, tied for 59th), Alex Gibson of Glens Falls (81-89-170, tied for 59th), Thomas Cassidy of Albany Academy (87-84-171, tied for 66th), Matt Parrottino of Voorheesville (90-88-178, tied for 81st), Thomas Kenneally of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (88-91-179, tied for 83rd) and David Renko of Scotia-Glenville (86-106-192, tied for 94th).
