ValleyCats earn split with Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vt. Chris Cotton, Andrew Walter and Patrick Christensen combined on a one-hitter to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 2-1 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in the second game of a New York-Penn League double-header Tuesday night at Centennial Field.
The ’Cats lost the first game, 2-1, but bounced back to avoid their first two-game losing streak of the season.
Tri-City scored both of its runs in the fourth inning in the second game. Dan Gulbransen reached on an error and later went to third on a double by Luis Alvarez.
After Gulbransen scored on a ground out, Adam Nelubowich’s single brought in Alvaerz.
B.J. Boyd hit his second home run of the double-header to pull the Lake Monsters to within one in the bottom of the fourth, but Christensen came on in the seventh and struck out the side to preserve the victory.
Boyd’s two-run HR in the first inning game Vermont all the runs it needed in the opener. The ’Cats scored in the fifth when Robbie Mitchell doubled and came around on a pair of ground outs.
