Mohawk Honda growth gets OK from Glenville officials
Expansion to add bays, new car wash
GLENVILLE Mohawk Honda will begin construction on a 5,100-square-foot expansion of its Glenville facility that will accommodate new service bays, an automatic car wash facility and more.
The town’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved final site plan review for the nearly $1 million project Monday. The expansion, which would go up to the east of the dealership’s facility at 175 Freemans Bridge Road, will create at least a dozen new jobs.
“Mohawk Honda has been one of Glenville’s great success stories,” Town Supervisor Chris Koetzle said via email. “They have done so well since they opened their state-of-the-art dealership here, and we are proud that they made Glenville their home. They add to our tax base, they create more jobs in our community and they have beautified one of our key commercial corridors.”
The extra square footage will be used to house five new service bays, three detail bays, an automatic car wash and a brand new auto buffer machine called the Auto Butler. Construction should wrap up in April 2014.
“This expansion will help us add new services,” Mohawk Honda General Manager Nick Bonarrigo said in a statement. “We’ll be able to add express service bays for our customers and have a dedicated area for fast oil changes and other maintenance-related services.”
The nearly 100-year-old company moved from Schenectady to its current 43,000-square-foot facility three years ago. Since then, it has doubled the size of its staff to nearly 140 employees.
In March, Mohawk Honda expanded next door with the purchase of the old Carbone Carpets property. The plan was to use the adjacent space to expand the dealership’s outdoor sales area. The purchase also allowed Mohawk to move inventory it was keeping at two rented lots on Route 50 to the Freemans Bridge Road site.
The existing Glenville facility recently underwent some renovations of the solar power variety. Mohawk Honda installed a 200-kilowatt solar panel system on its roof that is designed to generate about 230,000 kilowatt hours a year, or about 60 percent of the dealership’s annual usage.
The system came from New York Light Energy Company of Latham and was largely financed through Arizona-based Kyocera Solar Inc. with a supporting grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. It should save the dealership about $500,000 over the next 20 years.
The solar panels will also help Mohawk Honda eventually power a line of electric car-charging stations that it’s planning to install down the road.
