Congress Park cameras record fountain vandalism
SARATOGA SPRINGS Police are investigating the second incident of vandalism of a Congress Park fountain this summer.
A surveillance camera in the park caught two young men climbing on the fountain next to the Canfield Casino around 2:19 a.m. Thursday, according to police. Their actions appear to have caused the multilayered fountain to fall over, police said.
Saratoga Springs Department of Works Commissioner Skip Scirocco said it appears the individuals were looking for coins in the fountain, but it isn’t clear from the tape. Because the fountain is designed like a “layer cake,” he said, it will be possible to reassemble the multiple layers in about two weeks. Repair work includes welding the piece back together, sanding the damaged areas and painting it.
According to Scirocco, the damage is not as bad as what happened during the vandalism at the end of June. “Last time it was a little more extensive,” he said, noting that parts broke off the different layers then.
Because of computer problems at the time, video footage from that incident has not been reviewed yet, but Scirocco said attempts to analyze it are ongoing. There are a total of 11 cameras in the park.
The multiple vandalism attempts go beyond anything Scirocco remembered in recent past. He said his department is trying to figure out a way to better secure the fountain, which essentially consists of pieces sitting on top of each other and a water pipe running through the center.
Footage from the latest vandalism incident is slightly obscured by a nearby light, which makes it hard to see the people.
According to police, the incident appears to have involved two men, both with dark hair. With them were one blond woman and one dark-haired woman.
The group was seen on cameras entering Congress Park from the Spring Street side around 2:14 a.m. Footage shows them walking on the roadway past the casino and on to East Congress Street, where they stop for a minute and talk to an unknown individual, with whom police are interested in speaking. A few minutes later the men are in the fountain and three minutes after that the group is recorded running from the park toward Broadway.
