Silversun Pickups to headline Tulip Fest
ALBANY — Atmospheric alt-rockers Silversun Pickups will headline the main stage at this year’s Tulip Festival.
The 65th annual festival will once again return to Washington Park for two days, Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12, with music both days sponsored by Vermont-based alternative rock station WEQX-FM. Silversun Pickups will close out festivities on Saturday, as part of a main stage bill that will also include The Features and Royal Teeth.
Los Angeles-based Silversun Pickups first shot to national attention with their debut album, 2006’s “Carnavas,” earning heavy EQX airplay with the singles “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles.” “Swoon” followed in 2009, expanding upon the quartet’s Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine-inspired fuzz guitar and atmospherics. Last year, the band released its third album, “Neck of the Woods,” smoothing out some of its rougher edges for a more modern pop sound.
Tennessee indie rockers The Features have been slowly building a following since the mid-’90s. In 2009 the band signed with Kings of Leon’s Serpents & Snakes imprint, releasing “Some Kind of Salvation” and its 2011 follow-up, “Wilderness.” A self-titled album is due out in May.
Newcomers Royal Teeth, from Louisiana, recently released their debut EP, “Act Naturally,” featuring the easy going pop single “Wild.” The sextet, which combines male and female harmonies with atmospheric indie rock guitars and keyboards, will release a full-length album this year.
Also on Saturday, local bands will play on the Amp Stage at the Washington Park Lakehouse Amphitheater, including Tor and the Fjords, Olivia Quillio, Rick Rourke & Lost Wages and Bryan Thomas.
Main stage acts for Sunday will be Grand Central Station and Bernie & The Jets, an Elton John tribute band. Sunday’s Amp Stage lineup will feature local favorites Annie & The Hedonists, MaryLeigh & The Fauves, The Dylan Perrillo Orchestra and Eastbound Jesus.
