Gloversville man convicted of having sex with girl, 16
JOHNSTOWN A Fulton County Court jury deliberated about four hours Thursday before convicting a Gloversville man of having sex with a 16-year-old girl.
The jury found Aljabbar B. Crenshaw, 30, of Homestead Drive, guilty of one count of third-degree criminal sexual act and two counts of third-degree rape. He was acquitted on a charge of second-degree rape, which accused him of having sex with a 13-year-old girl. He was also acquitted on one count of third-degree rape, which alleged a third encounter with the older girl.
None of the allegations involved force, but both girls are too young to legally consent to sex.
The verdict came on the fourth day of trial before Judge Polly A. Hoye. She set sentencing for Aug. 25, when Crenshaw could receive up to four years in prison.
Prosecutor Chad Brown said the jury may have been influenced by Crenshaw’s statement to police, in which he admitted having sex with the older girl but denied having any contact with the younger.
Defense attorney Robert Abdella, who was not available Friday, told the jury in his closing statement that the case against his client is “based entirely on talk.” He emphasized that there was no physical evidence supporting the allegations, but Brown pointed out in his closing that police learned of the contact weeks after the events and by then there was no point in conducting medical exams.
Abdella told jurors they would have to carefully weigh “the credibility of very troubled teenagers.” He said the younger girl had a crush on Crenshaw.
The investigation by Gloversville police began last summer after the mother of the younger girl found a note she had written to Crenshaw but apparently never delivered.
“Both [girls] can be considered vulnerable kids,” Brown told the jury in his closing.
“There are no excuses in a case like this,” he said, reminding the jury that the girls were unknown to each other.
He told the jury Crenshaw never bothered to learn the names of either girl.
Crenshaw was accused of having sex with the girls in apartments on Fremont and Washington streets. He was arrested Oct. 22 and indicted in December.
