SARATOGA SPRINGS – A man died in a boating accident late Wednesday morning on Fish Creek, police said.
The man, identified as Wieslaw Prelewicz, 78, of Albany, was pulled from the water and taken to Saratoga Hospital, where he died, police said.
The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. near the Fish Creek Marina as the man was out fishing, police spokesman Lt. Robert Jillson said.
The boat the man was in apparently kicked forward unexpectedly, throwing him from the boat, Jillson said. Prelewicz was wearing a flotation device, but his clothing became entangled in the engine’s prop.
A woman and her son who were with the man summoned help from a nearby boat. Those on that boat responded and assisted in freeing Prelewicz and get him into the boat. Responding fire department personnel then arrived at the boat in another vessel with the help of one of the owners of the marina, police said.
Pulled from the water, rescuers got him back to shore, but he was soon pronounced dead, Jillson said.
An autopsy is scheduled, but police said that everything they’ve gathered so far points to an accidental drowning.
