Over the course of the first half of the 2020 Saratoga meet, the rail position has only won 10% of the first 191 races run. Café Americano (2-1) is looking to overcome that trend Friday when she takes off in the Perfect Sting Stakes, run over 1 1/16 miles of the inner turf.
The filly has not run since the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keenland last October, where she finished a steady fourth. Friday’s race will be her first non-graded competition in her last three outings, which included a win in the Grade III Pucker Up Stakes, where she broke free from a tight pack at the top of the stretch to secure a 2 1/4-length victory. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. returns to his mount here as he has for all but one of her previous five races.
Café Americano boasts the best turf speed of any of the competitors today and breezed four furlongs on Aug. 8 at the Oklahoma Training Track in a time of :48.1. If she proves to be back in racing form, she should be the one to beat.
