Schenectady business moves up in national ranking

John D. Marcella & Son Appliances is the 81st largest appliance dealer in the nation, according to an annual ranking by the trade publication TWICE, also known as "This Week in Consumer Electronics."

The Schenectady business moved up two spots from last year's ranking in the "Top 100 Major Appliance Retailers" list, published each June. The report showed that appliance dealers posted a cumulative $24.7 billion in sales of major household appliances last year — a 2.1 percent increase from 2011.

Marcella's saw a much larger year-over-year increase of 7.7 percent, with a total $14 million in major appliance sales last year. It was also the only Capital Region appliance firm to make the list, according to a news release issued by Schenectady County officials.

“We are dedicated to providing our customers with exceptional service, low prices and a great selection," said John D. Marcella in the release. "We try harder to please our customers and it is very rewarding for us to be listed among the nation’s top selling appliance stores.”

Marcella's was founded in 1953 in the city's Mont Pleasant neighborhood, and moved to a brand new store with an 18,000-square-foot showroom on Broadway in 2009.

It has full kitchen displays of GE Profile, JennAir, Electrolux, Electrolux Icon, Miele & Wolf/Sub-Zero, and Viking products. The showroom floor displays brands such as Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch, Frigidaire, Samsung, GE Profile, GE Café and GE Monogram.

"This is a tribute to John Marcella, his family and his employees," said county Legislature Chairwoman Judy Dagostino in the release. "It is great to see a Schenectady-based company rank among the national leaders."

Sears led the annual TWICE survey, followed by Lowe’s, Home Depot and Best Buy.
