Saratoga Day 10, 7/30

It had been more than six months since Rosa Salvaje ran the race of her life to win an allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream Park, but she showed good form Monday in the inaugural $100,000 Shakespeare Caress at Saratoga Race Course, winning by a neck in her return.

“It took a long time to get her right again [from a foot abscess],” Lewis said. “But she's always been a nice filly, she always tries hard, she hardly ever throws in a bad one. We knew she'd come down here and run hard.”

Jockey Alex Solis brought 19-1 Rosa Salvaje to the wire ahead of Holiday for Kitten. Both had followed pacesetters Ballistic Sue and Well Deserved, then kicked in at the top of the stretch.

In the first quarter mile, Page Springs had her saddle slip toward her hind quarters and bucked rider Oriani Rossi from her back. Neither horse nor rider were injured.
