Saratoga Day 7, 7/27

The Chad Brown-trained Street Life is ready for the Travers.

It wasn't the Grade II Jim Dandy, the traditional Travers prep race, but Street Life showed Brown enough in the $100,000 Curlin on Friday to point him toward the Mid-Summer Derby at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 25.

Street Life ran his usual late charge through the mud, this time, which was a bit of an unknown for the Street Sense colt.

“I was optimistic the horse would handle the mud. I'd never raced him in it, but he's had strong gallops in it,” said Brown, a Mechanicville native. “It seems like he has a little more focus, he's a little sharper in the mud when I've galloped him. So I was holding out hope he'd handle it, and he loved it. So it worked out.”

Street Life ran the first half of the 1 1/8 miles a few lengths behind the field before firing around the final turn. He got outside the pack of leaders and was the outside horse in a group of four running shoulder to shoulder into the stretch, when the inner-most runner Love to Run drifted out and carried the entire group with him.

Street Life kept his composure under jockey Jose Lezcano and kicked through the stretch to catch Five Sixteen around the eighth pole and pull off to a 1 3/4-length win.
