Saratoga Day 22, 8/13

Ramon Dominguez has more than 20,000 career starts, but Monday's eighth race at Saratoga Race Course was even a rarity for him.

The allowance optional claimer covered two miles of the main track.

“I probably could count on one hand the number of times [I've raced two miles],” Dominguez said. “I don't really remember the last time I raced two miles.”

He rode Ea to the win, beating Sensor by 6 1/4 lengths. Sumo led the group of six horses through a first quarter mile in 24.69 and a half in 48.73.

Dominguez controlled his own horse's pace to save him for the second mile.

“I was doing everything I could to slow my horse down, and I was pretty happy with his progression through the backstretch the second time around,” said Dominguez, who won his fourth race of the day aboard Ea. “We got to a half mile and he wanted to open up, and I didn't really discourage him.”

Sensible Lady made the inaugural running of the $100,000 Coronation Cup at Saratoga her seventh win in 12 career starts, those coming over eight different tracks.

Kiss in the Forest and Heaven Knows What dueled in the stretch while Sensible Lady made her run on the outside to win the 5 1/2-mile turf sprint by 2 3/4 lengths.

The Maryland-based Timothy Salzman has ambitious plans for the filly, possibly angling toward the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

“There's a $200,000 [five-furlong Turf Amazon, Sept. 3 at Parx] at Philly. We were thinking, we might run against the boys at Philly [five-furlong Grade III $350,000 Turf Monster, Sept. 3], and it's a win-and-you're-in into the Breeders' Cup,” he said. “That's a big stretch, but you know, she's a nice filly.”

Owner Ahmed Zayat announced Monday on his Twitter account that Haskell-winner Paynter will not run in the Grade I $1 million Travers on Aug. 25.

The announcement covered three posts, too long for any one 140-character entry, as follows:

“Paynter update. Tack walked again. @JustinZayat and Ben went training with Bob Baffert at Del Mar. Bob told Justin tell your dad to trust me this horse is special. Let's not run him in Travers. He won't be ready in time. Too Close. Will never go against my trainers word. Especially when it comes to Bob Baffert. NO TRAVERS FOR PAYNTER. @Midnightlute @JustinZayat #patiencerewardsyou”
