Saratoga Day 20, 8/11
As good as Wise Dan has been on as many surfaces as he's won, adding soft turf to the list was a concern for trainer Charles Lopreti.
“It always is when you've never run over a soft turf like that,” he said. “He's never worked over it, he's never ran over it. I was a little concerned, but Johnny said he wasn't a bit worried. When I saw him down on the inside there, backing up a little, I said 'Oh, boy.' But Johnny said he had so much horse, he could have pulled the trigger at any time he wanted. He's really confident in this horse, he's done a great job with him.”
Wise Dan won the Grade II $500,000 Fourstardave on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, his sixth victory in eight starts and those over several surfaces. He has won graded stakes over dirt and firm turf at Churchill Downs in that stretch, as well as the all-weather surface at Keeneland.
Saturday, he waited along the rail until frontrunner Get Stormy drifted out near the eighth pole, then he charged along the rail to win convincingly by five lengths.
“I was not surprised with the way he ran in the stretch,” winning Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez said. “He was going so well. As soon as I let his head go, he responded really well and took off.”
Chad Brown's Corporate Jungle was second, two lengths ahead of third-place Get Stormy.
