Busy day in golf

It was a busy day in local golf, with both the 56th New York State Senior & Super Senior Amateur Golf Championship and the Northeastern New York PGA Match Play Championship deciding titles.

In the State Senior Amateur at Wolferts Roost CC, Chuck Connolly, the local favorite from Kingswood Links, struggled with a 79 and finished in third place overall, two shots behind winner Steve Nosonowitz of McCann Golf Club. Connolly, 67, did win his third straight Super Senior title for players 65 and over. He has three overall senior titles.

Meanwhile, Bob Mucha of Greenock Country Club defeated Frank Mellet of Colonie Golf & Country Club, 3-and-2, in the local pros' Match Play Championship at Albany Country Club. Mucha's hot putter was the difference, as he constantly got up and down for par. He had just one bogey but didn't make a birdie. Mellet hit eight of nine greens in regulation on the front and made the only match of the day on the 10th hole, but he couldn't make the putts when it counted.

It was the first major title for Mucha. Mellet is the 2010 NENYPGA Player of the Year. He previously won two Match Play titles.
