Big weekend for Union, RPI
Championship aspirations may be dashed this weekend for both the Union College and RPI football teams unless they come up with key victories at home.
Union (3-0, 3-3) has won three straight games and is tied with seventh-ranked Hobart (3-0, 6-0) on top of the Liberty League standings. The Dutchmen host Rochester (2-1, 3-2) Saturday at 1:30 in their annual homecoming game on Frank Bailey Field. Union needs to keep rolling to stay in first place.
Meanwhile, RPI (3-1, 5-1) is in a must-win situation, because the Engineers already have a loss and another setback against Hobart today at East Campus Stadium at noon would put them two behind the powerful Statesmen. Union, of course, wouldn't mind seeing its archrival beat Hobart.
A lot could be decided on Saturday for both local programs. Wins keep them both in the title chase. Losses by both teams may keep Hobart in the driver's seat, because all the Statesmen would have to do is win out. They host Union next week in Geneva.
