Local teams extend season

It looks like a longer season for the several area fall sports teams that earned berths to the NCAA Tournament.

We're still waiting to hear about The College of Saint Rose's fate in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship, but it's pretty certain the defending national champions will get an at-large berth into this year's field.

But the Union College women's soccer team, the Skidmore College field hockey team and the Skidmore women's volleyball team each received at-large bids today.

Union, ranked 25th in the country, will play Saturday against Brandeis at Amherst. Skidmore's field hockey team hosts UMass-Dartmouth Wednesday at 1. Skidmore's volleyball team faces SUNY-New Paltz Friday at Clarkson University.

RPI's men's soccer team and UAlbany's field hockey team earned NCAA Tournament berths by winning their respective conference tournaments over the weekend. UAlbany finds out its opponent Tuesday, while RPI plays Christopher Newport Saturday at Swarthmore.
