County Am prepares for rain
This could be the sloppiest Gazette County Amateur ever.
I don't ever remember a round of the County Am being wiped out by rain, and I'm hoping that continues to be the case this weekend, although the weather forecast is not a pleasant one.
We could have rain all three days of the tournament, which begins Friday and runs through Sunday. Friday's forecast is mixed, with some sun expected in the afternoon. There are thunderstorms predicted for Saturday, and even more rain expected on Sunday.
I talked to Muny head pro Brian Damon today, and he assured me that he and his staff would do everything they can to make sure we get this tournament in. If the course becomes unplayable, however, he will make the call to stop play.
My goal is to get all three rounds in somehow, but we may end up shortening the tournament if the weather becomes too much of an obstacle. Muny can handle only so much rain.
Weather did force the cancellation of a round in the Gazette Women's Amateur one year, and it also wiped out the Gazette Women's Best Ball Championship one season, and it had to be postponed until September.
We also had problems with the Gazette Senior County Am a couple of times when torrential rains made play almost impossible.
But I don't remember ever losing a round of golf in the County Am since I started running it about 20 years ago.
I hope my string of luck continues.
