It's tough enough when youngsters age 17 and 18 beat veteran tennis players, but when those youngsters are subbing for the regular team members, it's even harder to accept.
The four substitute New York Buzz beat the veterans from the Philadelphia Freedoms, 23-14, tonight in a World TeamTennis match at University at Albany's SEFCU Arena.
Leading the way for the Buzz was two-time state champ Matt Kandath, an Albany Academy graduate and a native of Gansvoort. Kandath, who is headed to Stanford in the fall, held serve four times. He teamed with Jarmere Jenkins to win the men's doubles match but lost the mixed doubles match with partner Allie Will.
Also on the substitute roster for the Buzz was Lauren Embree, who wrapped up the win with a convincing 5-1 triumph over Asia Mohammad in the women's single finale.
The Buzz return to the SEFCU Arena for another home match Sunday at 4:30 against the Boston Lobsters. All four of the regular Buzz junior players from the USTA ranks are expected to be available.
About 900 people were in attendance for the season opener.
