I'm red in more ways than one
Thursday, August 20, 2009

Two golf-related topics are making me see red.

Since we're finally getting the hot temperatures that summer is known for, I can't seem to find the right sun screen. I'm literally burning up every time I play golf, and my skin is quite red, especially around my neck and ears.

Add to that a balky putter that today produced six three-putts in just nine holes, and you can see why I'm seeing red all over the place.

I find it very difficult to protect myself from the sun while golfing, even though I know it's not good for my health. I always wear a hat of some kind, I wear golf shirts that are not flimsy and cover everything except my arms, and I put plenty of sunscreen on. The problem is, when I perspire, most of the stuff comes off, no matter how much the product claims it won't.

I need sunscreen rated 70 to be safe, and I don't really care about trying to get a tan. All I ever get is a burn. People who see me after the first few rounds of golf every season know I've been in the sun.

Any suggestions out there about sunscreens? I'm also wondering if I should invest in one of those big hats like Tom Kite wears. Perhaps it will keep more sun off me.

As for my putting, I'm not sure anybody can help me there. I'm very streaky. I was putting fine a week ago, when I tried a grip that resembles a long-putter or belly-putter grip with my left hand, only used with a regulation-size putter. I've got to bend way down to use it, but I seem to see the line better. Problem is, my pace control comes and goes.

I'm also wondering if the eye glasses I've been wearing for the last couple of years are affecting my golf game. I asked my doctor about it when he fitted me for trifocals (I'm getting old), and he said it could be a problem for golf and bowling. I might need to buy sun glasses to be used strictly for golf.

Anybody out there have the same problem?
