Mayoral candidates selling solar

Mayoral candidate Roger Hull is calling for an all-out push to convince GE to build its solar panel manufacturing plant in Schenectady.

In a press release, he said Schenectady deserves the same level of effort used to get Global Foundries to build its computer chip manufacturing plant in Saratoga County.

Hull is running under his own party, the Alliance Party, but also has the Republican endorsement.

Acting Mayor Gary McCarthy, who is running for mayor on the Democratic line, said that level of effort is already underway.

Local, state and federal officials are lobbying GE, he said, describing them as “the people who are best positioned to make this happen.”

He added that he thinks Hull is simply trying to use the solar panel plant as a “political opportunity.”

“We don’t need someone taking shots at it,” he said. “We’re not doing a PR campaign, but we’re doing one of substance.”

Hull said he had personally written Gov. Andrew Cuomo and asked him to “intercede on the city’s behalf” to bring GE’s plant here.
