The New York Civil Liberties Union has launched VoterGuideNY.com, a guide that evaluates congressional candidates on a host of civil liberties issues.
The group sent a 12-question survey to all New York congressional candidates. The questions covered a wide range of civil liberties-related issues, including reproductive rights, lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender rights, privacy, women’s rights, torture, due process and immigrants’ rights.
The voter guide presents the answers of the candidates who responded to the survey – 22 candidates, representing 15 congressional races across the state.
“The outcome of this election could have an unprecedented impact on the civil rights and liberties of New Yorkers and all Americans,” said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the group. “Our guide is a tool to help voters understand where the candidates stand on issues central to protecting our freedom and liberty.”
The Web site also includes sample questions on important civil rights and liberties issues for voters to ask congressional candidates at public forums or campaign stops.
