RIP to an American icon: Maya Angelou

"You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise. ... "

-- Maya Angelou, whose death was announced Wednesday. She was a master of personal reinvention, and a mother of words that in part captured her tortuous childhood yet still clung fiercely to hope.
