Manny in Atlantic City
Manny Lucero, a Mexican featherweight who fights out of Albany, was in Atlantic City last Saturday night (Jan. 28) to go up against the Irish featherweight champion Patrick Hyland, and I was there to observe. It was a tough assignment, Hyland being undefeated with 24 straight wins and Lucero being on the downside of a distinguished career, now reduced to taking fights that he is unlikely to win, for the sake of a paycheck.
He acquitted himself with distinction, fighting hard for the full eight rounds, never going down, getting in some good licks though usually coming out on the short end of the exchanges. It was a unanimous decision for Hyland, with the judges awarding Lucero one, two or three rounds, which doesn't really indicate how competitive the fight was. Lucero is one tough guy, and I came away with even more regard than I had for him when I saw him win in Albany and Troy last year. Easy to look good when you're getting the best of it, not so easy when you're getting the worst. Manny looked very good in Atlantic City.
