Ring report (with photos)
It was a solid night of boxing last week at the Convention Center of Empire State Plaza, brought to you by Ares Promotions. The highlight of the evening was probably the first-round knockout scored by Javy Martinez of Albany in just his second professional fight, moving his record to 2-0.
Chris Fitzpatrick, originally from South Carolina, and now fighting out of the same gym as Javy, that is, Schott’s Gym in Albany, had a tougher time of it, going up against the battle-hardened Jose Medina of New Hampshire. He gave it his best but lost a unanimous decision.
The lowlight of the evening for a lot of fans and for me too was the judges’ decision of a draw in the fight between Sarah Kuhn of Schoharie and Jeanine “Kali” Reis of Rhode Island. It looked to me like a one-sided contest in Sarah’s favor, and the fans’ boos indicated they saw it the same.
Jaci Trivilino of Plattsburgh put on her usual show of non-stop punching to win a unanimous decision over Angela Gladney of South Carolina.
Marcus Williams, who trains in Schenectady, came back from a disappointing defeat at the hands of Jose Medina to score a convincing decision over Marcus Brooks of South Carolina.
Troy favorite Shawn Miller, coming off a knee injury, fought to a draw in Mark Anderson of South Carolina.
In the opening bouts, Aleem Whitfield of Geneva scored a TKO over Bruno Bouhi of the Bronx, and Kalven Jenkins of Troy, in his second professional bout, fought to a draw with Tim Skolnick of Chicago.
