For those with technical curiosity, I used a Canon Powershot, which is a compact camera of the point-and-shoot variety but with the refinement of manual controls, allowing me to set the aperture, shutter speed and ISO independently. For night shots I used a tripod, permitting longer exposures than are possible with a hand-held camera.
