Sen. Farley vs. Schenectady

For those of you who might be interested in how the state Legislature, including Schenectady’s own Sen. Hugh Farley, undermines efforts at good government in Schenectady, I humbly direct you to my column, The View From Here, in today’s (Sunday’s) edition of the Daily Gazette.

Not this edition, alas, but the one you have to pay for, either online at www.dailygazette.net, or printed on old-fashioned paper and available at your nearest convenience store.

There you will also find discussion of a Schenectady cop spending working hours at a bowling alley in Scotia AFTER several other cops had come under investigation for similar truancy. And you will find the news that formal charges have been brought against two of those cops -- under a disciplinary regime that the police unions, with the connivance of the state Legislature, are trying to subvert.

So much for your money!

Don't do you love how the owner of Rolling Green now tells channel 6 she never ever saw the officer in there before.

I'm still mulling over the fact that there were 12 police cruisers protecting and defending us against that poor guy in the tree the other night. Who determines how resources are allocated during a shift? Who was left to patrol the streets of Schenectady?

I read your column in the print edition and agree with your assessment of the Union/Albany connection. Dollar after excessive tax dollar spent with little discussion and essentially no accountability in the pursuit of job retention.

As a side note, it frustrates me that I would have to pay to view the online version ($1/week) even though I subscribe, 7 days, to the print version.

Shame on Sen. Farley. The same politicians that say they want to lower property taxes are responsible through passing this type of legislation for raising property taxes. What a conundrum, but of course they are experts on that.
The Schenectady PD is out of control, and will continue to be out of control, as long as our elected officials acquiesce to these special interest groups. Stratton and Bennett should have taken a stronger stance on this continued theft of service by city employees. Their comments on this bowling alley incident did not show this, and I was disappointed.
It will be interesting to see how Tedisco and Amedore vote on this issue. I have a pretty good idea, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Shame on Senator Farley is right. He's obviously out of touch with what's going on. He's flip-flopping on how Schenectady Police corruption should be handled (which is not a new problem) and I say it's time for a change in this district. Special interest groups should not be influencing important policy decisions, especially when public safety is at risk. Dem. Candidate "BK" Keramati is currently challenging Sen. Farley's position. BK has expressed strong values in this regard and offers a fresh public-oriented perspective, which can head us in the right direction.
