Friday night was fight night at the Saratoga Springs City Center, and I was there, your faithful fight correspondent, among other roles and responsibilities I assume for myself (like demolition derby and grand opera correspondent).
The main event was Buddy McGirt Jr., son of the former welterweight champion, versus the previously-unknown-to-me Ray “Hallelujah” Joval, out of the Netherlands, whose most distinguishing feature was a little fringe of bleached blond hair surrounding a clean-shave black pate. It turned out to be what boxing aficionados call “a very entertaining fight,” meaning non-stop action, including a couple of knockdowns, with McGirt emerging the winner by decision.
Co-feature was Gary “The Whip” Wilcox of Saratoga against a supposedly rising star, 22-year-old undefeated Nagy Aguilera of Newburgh. Aguilera won but did not look like a rising star to me. Too flabby, too hesitant. More blinking than punching.
A couple of young Schenectady fellows squared off in one of the two walk-out fights, after the television cameras had packed up, and a good-looking young lightweight from Guilderland, Mike Faragon, fought in the other.
You can find details of these events along with further observations in my column in the Sunday Gazette, which I hope you will not delay in purchasing.
Meanwhile, if you would like to see a few photos that I snapped between note-taking you can do so by clicking HERE. They do not appear in the print edition of the newspaper and so amount to a bonus for patrons of this Web site.
