Conway starts strong
Saratoga Springs field hockey coach Jo-Anne Hostig thinks she has a potential all-star in sophomore forward Maggie Conway.
“I compare her to Elise Britt,” Hostig said after Wednesday’s season-opening 3-1 win at defending Suburban Council champion Niskayuna. “Elise was so scrappy. Once she learned where to go and to keep her stick down, she was fabulous.”
Conway already has the stick down part. She scored the Blue Streaks’ first two goals, both on first-half penalty corners, when she directed passes from Marissa Folts and Samantha Petruzzo, respectively, into the left corner of the cage from close range.
“People say they have their stick down. She has her stick down,” said Hostig.
Conway was a late-season varsity call-up as a freshman.
Britt scored a team-high 15 goals for Saratoga’s 2004 state Class A runner-up edition. Britt helped the Blue Streaks get to the New York final four when she scored both goals, the second in double overtime, in a 2-1 regional win against Rome Free Academy.
