Boys lacrosse: Prendergast piles up goals
Niskayuna junior midfielder John Prendergast was the key triggerman in Wednesday night’s 14-7 Section II Class A title-game win over Shenendehowa with seven goals.
Prendergast delivered five first-half goals to help Niskayuna open up a 6-4 lead, and he notched the first and last goals in a game-changing 4-0 run to start the third quarter.
Prendergast several times made a strong run toward the cage and unleashed, getting past a defender one time with a beautiful swim move.
“We weren’t generating offense from our usual suspects,” said Niskayuna coach Mike Vorgang. “His first half was huge.”
Prendergast had scored as many as four goals in a game this season before his monster performance.
“On any night we have several guys who can step up like that,” said Prendergast, who has committed to national champion Duke University.
The Section II championship-game goal record is nine, set by Niskayuna’s Basil Daratsos in 19-5 Class A win over Guilderland in 2005. That’s the year Niskayuna reached its first state final.
Mark Bryan had three goals and eight assists in that Niskayuna win. Kevin Hunt of Johnstown had five goals and eight assists in a 2008 17-14 Section II Class C title-game win over Schuylerville. The eight assists by the two are believed to be the Section II title-game record, and Hunt’s 13 points are believed to be another record.
