Boys hoop: Hoosic Valley wins state semifinal
John Rooney sank a runner in the final seconds, and Waterville missed at the other end, as Hoosic Valley held on for a 62-58 state Class C semifinal win Friday at the Glens Fallc Civic Center.
Hoosic Valley (21-3) will go after its first state championship Saturday night at 7:15 when it takes on Middle Early College (Section VI, 19-5).
Mike Pierre had 27 points and three steals for Hoosic Valley, the state’s No. 1-ranked team and a final four participant for the first time since 2005. Rooney had 19 points and eight rebounds, J.T. Sawyer added 12 points, and Mac Anderson finished with seven assists.
Hoosic Valley shot 53 percent from the field, with Pierre and Rooney going a combined 20-for-38 for New York’s No 1-ranked team.
Zach Sawyer led Waterville (Section III, 21-2) with 26 points and eight rebounds.
Middle Early College got 31 points from Kevin Briggs, and 18 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists from Brian Brown, in a 72-66 win over Frienda Academy (Section VIII, 18-4). Middle Early College is ranked No. 2 in the state.
