Field hockey: Smith to Glens Falls HOF
Cindy Smith is headed to the Glens Falls Athletic Hall of Fame for the second time.
Smith’s state championship field hockey team from 2000 was part of the hall’s 2012 induction class, and the successful coach will be honored again with four other individuals in an October ceremony.
Smith’s stint with Glens Falls was highlighted by back-to-back state Class B title game appearances in 1999 and 2000.
The Indians only loss (20-1) in 1999 came against Garden City in the state final, 2-1. The Indians avenged that loss in the 2000 state semifinals, topping Garden City, 2-0, before claiming the title with a 4-2 triumph over Whitney Point.
The 2000 Glens Falls edition, which went 23-0, included Foothills Council first-team all-stars Cathleen Kerman, Avery Clark, Ashley Sturdevant, Kristen Vincent and Maggie Donohue.
Glens Falls won another state Class B championship in 2001 under coach Michelle Venditto.
The October hall of fame class will also include Jim Coclanis (football, basketball, baseball, track; posthumous), Matt Stevens (football, baseball), Marnie Sundberg (softball), Mina Ponda (distinguished service) and the 1973 wrestling team.
