Boys hoop: Game has interesting numbers
Some interesting numbers came out of the Saratoga Springs at Ballston Spa Suburban Council boys’ basketball game that was completed Thursday night with the Scotties on top in overtime, 71-67.
Both teams went 18-for-31 from the free throw line, and both teams knocked down nine three-point baskets. Ballston Spa had 13 two-point field goals to the Blue Streaks’ 11.
Of those 11, Noah Arciero (6) and Jesse Alexander (5) accounted for all of them. Their Saratoga teammate, Chris Byno, led all players with five three-point baskets, including a long ball that tied the game at 61 and forced the extra session.
Jeremy Mendrick led Ballston Spa with 25 points, six coming in overtime, and Sean Walsh had 18 with a team-high four threes. Arciero paced the Blue Streaks with 24 points.
The game was halted 1:31 into play Tuesday night when Arciero made a steal and dunked the ball. His two-handed jam snapped the rim off its mount, leaving the hoop dangling from the backboard. Immediate efforts to repair the damage were unsuccessful.
When play resumed Thursday, Saratoga held an 8-3 lead, and the Blue Streaks were up at the half, 32-25. The Scotties outscored the Blue Streaks in the second half, 36-29.
