School baseball: Sabres hurl shutouts

Three games, three complete-game shutouts for Schalmont’s defending Section II Class B champion baseball team.

Junior Nick Bird authored the Sabres third gem Saturday in a 4-0 non-league win over Cairo-Durham, scattering four hits while striking out seven.

Junior Matt Capovani went the distance Friday in a 1-0 Colonial Council win against Mechanicville, and was one out away from a no-hitter when Nate Popiel singled. Capovani finished with 15 strikeouts and a walk.

Senior Greg Musk hurled a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks Thursday when the Sabres opened their campaign with a 10-0 league blanking of Watervliet.

Musk faced the minimum 21 batters in coach Bob Anderson’s 300th win with the Sabres.

Musk and Capovani pitched no-hitters last season. Musk shut down top-seeded Chatham in a sectional semifinal game, 6-0, and Capovani spun his gem when Schalmont beat Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 22-0, in the first round of the Bruce Bouck Memorial Tournament.

The Niskayuna boys’ lacrosse team lost on the road to Connecticut heavyweight Darien Saturday, 8-7, on a goal by Harry Gillespie with 5:41 left.

Niskayuna’s only loss last season, and its last regular season setback, also came by a single goal.

Dale Stasco’s goal with two seconds left gave Garden City a 10-9 state Class B semifinal win over the Silver Warriors last year. Niskayuna finished 21-1, and was denied a third trip to a New York final after appearances in 2009 and 2005.

Niskayuna’s last regular season loss in May of 2012 came against Duxbury, Mass, 8-7. Sam Sweet notched the game-winner with 13 seconds left in a battle between nationally-ranked teams.

Niskayuna went 20-2 in that 2012 season, with its other loss coming against West Islip in the state Class A semifinals, 9-6.

Niskayuna was 4-0 heading into Saturday’s game with Darien, a nine-time Connecticut state champion. Darien beat Trinity Catholic in its opener, 22-0, before edging Niskayuna.

Niskayuna beat Darien last season, 14-9. Darien beat Niskayuna in 2011, 8-4, and in 2010, 9-2.
