School notes: Lacrosse powers collide
The New York State Sportswriters Association’s top-ranked Class B boys’ lacrosse teams will collide Saturday night when No. 2 Niskayuna travels to No. 1 Jamesville-DeWitt.
The teams met last season at Jamesville-DeWitt, and Niskayuna came away with a 17-10 victory. Saturday’s rematch starts at 7.
Niskayuna improved to 11-0 Thursday with a 17-1 win over Bethlehem. Its record includes victories over a pair of state champions from the 2012 season in Darien (Connecticut) and Duxbury (Massachusetts). Jamesville-DeWitt slugged New Hartford Thursday, 20-3.
Niskayuna, in Class A, and Jamesville-DeWitt, in Class B, both reached the semifinals of the state tournament last season and lost by three goals. Jamesville-DeWitt captured state Class B championships in 2011, 2010 and 2007.
McDonnell to Alfred
Ryan McDonnell, who quarterbacked Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake to a pair of state championship football games, has committed to Alfred University.
McDonnell not only passed and ran for the Spartans, but also excelled as a punter and kicker, and earned all-state first-team honors for his work on special teams following the 2012 season.
Burnt Hills beat Sweet Home in the state Class A title game last November at the Carrier Dome, 40-20, with McDonnell firing touchdown passes to Dan Nuzzi and Eric Dillon. Burnt Hills lost to Maine-Endwell in the 2011 state final, 27-20.
McDonnell is finishing up his high school athletic career as a member of BH-BL’s baseball team.
Pasko to sign
Maple Hill cross country standout Kelly Pasko will sign a national letter of intent with Siena College Wednesday at the high school.
Pasko was selected to the all-state Class C fourth team following a superb senior cross country season. She placed first at Maple Hill’s Glover Invitational, the Fort Plain Invitational and the Patroon Conference championship meet. She also took fourth at the Section II Class C meet, and ran 19th at the state meet.
