School basketball: Tough double for Dutch
The Guilderland boys’ basketball team has a difficult back-to-back tonight and Saturday, and if successful, the Dutchmen will be off to their first four-win start since the 2008-09 season.
Guilderland travels to Colonie tonight in a Suburban Council game where the Garnet Raiders will be seeking their first victory under new head coach Jim Boland. Colonie lost to Columbia in overtime, 70-67, before Tuesday’s 50-48 setback against Averill Park. Nolan Smith fired in 27 points against Averill Park with six threes.
On Saturday, Guilderland will host Albany Academy, last season’s Federation Class A champion, in the first of two non-league games scheduled between the teams.
Academy is 2-0 with wins over Shenendehowa, 53-33, and Ogdensburg Free Academy, 65-63. Ray Jerome scored 22 points and John Moutopoulos netted 18 to lead the Cadets in those two victories.
Guilderland raced past Bethlehem, 75-57, and Columbia, 75-62, in games matching SC teams with high aspirations. Super sophomore Andrew Platek scored 19 points against Bethlehem and 23 against Columbia, while Vin Simeone added 21 against the Blue Devils.
Guilderland has been bolstered by the return of 6-foot-5 forward Matt Cerutti, who missed his junior season with a sports hernia after a breakout sophomore campaign. Cerutti had a double-double against Bethlehem with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
