School Notes: Academy in elite tourney
Albany Academy has joined the field for the 2014 Spalding Hoophall Classic set for Jan. 16-20 in Springfield, Mass.
The nation’s premier high school basketball showcase has 37 boys and girls teams from 16 states and Canada scheduled to compete, and several more teams are expected to be added to the list. Matchups and game dates and times have yet to be determined.
Albany Academy won the New York State Federation Tournament of Champions Class A title last season, and has John Moutopoulos, 6-foot-8 Marcus Jackson, Teigue Donohoe, Ray Jerome and Matt Knezovic among its returnng cast.
Jackson had 13 points and 13 rebounds when Academy beat John Adams for the Federation title, 50-34.
The boys’ Hoophall Classic lineup includes New York teams Bishop Kearney (Rochester), Lincoln (Brooklyn) and Our Savior New American (Centereach).
ST. ROSE TABS ARCENEAUX
Former Mechanicville pitching star Abby Arceneaux is the new softball coach at the College of Saint Rose following assistant stints at Cornell, Union and Siena.
The Golden Knights went 11-29-1 this past season but graduated just one senior starter.
With her father Don serving as Mechanicville’s coach, Arceneaux won three New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships and was twice named the state’s top C player.
She played at Union College and became the program’s all-time leader in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts.
