DUALS DONE
Section II Duals
Born: 2006
Died: 2010.
Cause(s) of death: Apathy, bloated schedules, terminal inertia
Survived by: Former Colonie coach Joe Guardino (father), close personal friends Shenendehowa, Queensbury and other who nourished the four-year-old.
Calling hours: None. Instead of flowers, relatives ask for some progressive thinking in the Section II wrestling community.
The Section II Duals, an idea proposed and developed by former Colonie HIgh coach Joe Guardino, have come to an end, at least in the form we’ve come to know for the past four seasons.
The tourney, which did not count towards the allocated team and individual participation points total, provided a means to determine which team in Section II was the best each season. That meant any school, any size that wished to participate.
The cancellation of this year’s event, scheduled for next Saturday at Shenendehowa, came via e-mail Friday from Section II wrestling coordinator and Hudson Falls coach George Chickanis, who wrote:
“After careful consideration and consulting with the Section II Executive Committee, I recommended that with only six teams entered in the Section II Dual Meet Tournament that we table the event for this year and when our wrestling committee meets in the spring we can discuss the future of this event. Therefore there will be no Section 2 Dual Meet Tournament this year.”
Shenendehowa won three of the team titles, and Queensbury took the other, in the event’s four-year run.
The Division II schools (enrollments 600 and under) never really got behind the event — with the exception of Hudson Falls, Duanesburg and Whitehall — preferring to see two tournaments, based on enrollment.
That may be the way for the event to be resurrected. And if that happens, there won’t truly be a team champion.
Who’s No. 1?
Not Secton II wrestling.
