State soccer schedule
Tuesday, November 17, 2009

The schedule for Section II teams playing in this weekend’s state soccer championships has been finalized.

All of the boys game will be played at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta.
The girls are using three sites in the Cortland area — SUNY-Cortland, Homer High School and Tompkins Cortland CC.

BOYS

Class AA — Shenendehowa vs. Newburgh Free Academy, Saturday, 1:30.

The Plainsmen are in their first state semi since winning their sixth state championship in 1995. NFA, the Section IX champ, knocked off nationally-ranked Arlington in their regional semifinal, but their top two players, brothers Alex and Nick Bramall, picked up red cards in that game and will have to sit out the state semi. The Goldbacks were filing a protest in the behalf of Alex Bramall, who scored the winning goal in the 3-2 win over Arlington, picked up an early yellow card for disputing a call, and was given a second yellow (and automatic red card) with 6:30 to play.

Nick Bramall got carded after a first-half tackle, his third send booking of the postseason earning him a one-game suspension for accumulated cards.

The Class AA final is set for 1:30 on Sunday, against the winner of the Clarence (Section VI) vs. Brentwood (Section XI) game.

Class B — Broadalbin-Perth vs. Marcellus, Saturday, 10:30 a.m.

The Patriots hope to extend their historic season that has seen them win their first Foothills Council, Section II and regional championships. Marcellus, 18-1-1, the Section III winner, advanced by beating Section IV champ Oneonta, 2-1.

The winner gets either Grover Cleveland (Section VI) or Center Moriches (Section XI) at 11:40 a.m. Sunday.

Class C — Waterford-Halfmoon vs. Marathon, Saturday, 11:15 a.m.

The Fordians, with two state titles in their history, are in the Final Four for the first time since winning the Class D state title in 1996. Marathon, the Section IV champion, is in its fifth state semi since 2002 after downing Section III champ Cooperstown, 1-0, in the regional finals.

Holland (Section VI) meets Friends Academy (Section VIII) in the other semi, with Sunday’s championship game set for 12:30.

Class D — Northville vs. Belfast, Saturday, 1.

The Falcons are hoping to take care of some unfinished from last season, when they lost in the regional final in a game moved to an indoor facility. The Falcons have 21 Section II titles, and are after their thirds state crown, first since 1995. Belfast, the Section V champ, knocked out Section VI winner North Collins in sudden death in the Western Regional.

Perennial power Chazy of Section VII plays Section III’s Hamilton in the other same. The final is set for Sunday at 1.

GIRLS

Class A — Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake vs. Greece Arcadia, Friday, 12:15 at SUNY-Cortand.

The Spartans are back after missing the final four for the first time in four years last fall. This is the eighth time the Spartans have been in a Final Four since 1990, with a state title in 2003 and finalist showings in both 2005 and 2006. Greece Arcadia, 14-7, the Section V champ, beat Section VI champ Williamsville East on Kelly Shoniker’s goal 6.3 seconds from the end of the second OT.

Section I champ Eastchester plays annual state semifinalist South Side from Section VIII in the other semi. The final is set for Saturday at 1 at SUNY-Cortland.

Class B — Mechanicvillle vs. Livonia, Friday, 2:30 at Homer High School.

The Red Raiders made a habit of getting to this stage in the late 1980s. They returned in 2001, reaching the Class C final in Liz Villamil’s first season as head coach. Livonia, from Section V, posted a 2-0 win over Section VI champ East Aurora in the state quarters.

Center Moriches (Section XI) and Briarcliff (Section I) are in the other semi. The final is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at SUNY-Cortland.
