SPARTANS EXCEL

When the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls’ volleyball team swept Queensbury in the Section II Class A title-match Wednesday, it gave the high school its fifth sectional championship this fall.

Burnt Hills had earlier won sectional crowns in girls’ soccer, tennis and swimming, and in boys’ cross country. Burnt Hills also won the boys’ Suburban Council volleyball tournament for the sixth straight time, earning a regional berth with that three-match sweep.

The BH-BL girls’ volleyball team won its eighth straight sectional crown, while the girls’ tennis and swimming teams both won for the fourth year in a row.

GERSUK TO LACROSSE POWER

Albany Academy midfielder Caroline Gersuk will sign a letter of intent Monday to play lacrosse for Northwestern University, the five-time defending NCAA Division I champion.

Gersuk was named a Capital District Women’s Lacrosse League first team all-star for the second time last season after leading the Bears in scoring, and powering them to their second consecutive Section II Class C championship and an 18-1 record.

The team captain scored five goals in the sectional final, in a 12-8 win over Glens Falls, and had three goals in an 11-10 regional semifinal win over James I, O’Neill.

Gersuk will be entering her fifth varsity season for Albany Academy in the spring. She also played soccer for the Bears. She has been an honor roll student throughout her high school career.

Northwestern went 23-0 last season in winning its fifth straight NCAA title, and is 106-3 over those five seasons.

EAGLES REPEAT

Bethlehem captured its second straight Section II Class AA girls’ volleyball championship Wednesday with a 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Shenendehowa at Queensbury High School.

Jaci Oskam had seven kills and 12 blocks for top-seeded Bethlehem (18-1), Mary Dombrowski had 10 kills and five blocks, Julie Landrigan totaled six kills and three blocks, and Nicole Howland collected 33 assists. Hunter Drews had 14 kills, Emily Gillich had eight kills, and Joanie Cooney finished with 11 points and 31 assists for Shenendehowa (14-6).

Shenendehowa made its last title-match appearance in 1998 (Class A) and lost to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Bethlehem will join Burnt Hills in regional action Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The other Section II champs, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, Loudonville Christian and Mayfield, will go to Potsdam High School for regional matches.
