RPI, Union recruits looking to win junior hockey titles
RPI and Union hockey recruits will be playing for junior hockey titles over the next few days.
Three of the players will be trying to help the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots win the Royal Bank Cup, which determines the top team in Canadian Junior "A" hockey. The players are forward and Union recruit Kevin Shier, and RPI recruits Michael Prapavessis and forward Jacob Hayhurst. Shier is coming to Union next season. Prapavessis will be at RPI either next season or 2015-16. Hayhurst will join RPI in 2015-16.
Also in the tournament is RPI recruit and Vernon Vipers defenseman Jared Wilson. He will be coming to the Engineers next season.
The Patriots open play Saturday when they face the Dauphin Kings, while the Vipers face the Carelton Place Canadians in Saturday's second game at 10 p.m. The Yorkton Terriers is the other team in the event.
Each team will play four games. The top four teams advance to the semifinals on May 17. The championship game is May 18.
RPI 2014-15 recruit Drew Melanson and his Waterloo Black Hawks start the U.S. Hockey League's best-of-five Clark Cup final Friday when they face the Indiana Ice.
Two RPI recruits hope to help the Fairbanks Ice Dogs win the North American Hockey League's Robertson Cup. They are forwards Todd Burgess and Viktor Liljegren. Liljegren will be coming to RPI either this fall or in 2015. Burgess is coming in 2015 or 2016.
The Ice Dogs face the Austin Bruins, which features RPI recruit Charlie Manley, in the best-of-three series starting Friday. Manley will be at RPI either this fall or in 2015.
