Matt Hatch scored short-handed, and Max Novak added a power-play goal as top-ranked Union leads Vermont, 2-1, after the first period of play in the NCAA hockey tournament East Regional at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

With Novak in the box for slashing, Hatch drove down the right wing, cut past Vermont defenseman Ron Hamilton in the right circle and went to the net, where he put the puck past goalie Brody Hoffman's right arm 4:15 into the game.

Shortly after Brendan McCarthy tied it for the Catamounts, Novak was falling to the ice when took a Kevin Sullivan pass and deposited a backhander into the net.

Union has a 19-8 shot edge.
