For the first time in the program's 23-year NCAA Division I history, the Union hockey team is the top-ranked team in the country.

The ECAC Hockey-champion Dutchmen (28-6-4) moved up from second after receiving 31 of 50 first-place votes and 969 points in the poll released Monday. Union, which won the ECACH regular-season title, captured the league tournament crown over the weekend in Lake Placid by beating Cornell, 5-2, in the semifinals and Colgate, 5-2, in the championship game. It was Union's third straight tournament title.

The Dutchmen, who were the only NCAA team to win their league's regular season and tournament titles, are the top seed in the NCAA tournament East Regional, and No. 3 seed overall. They will face Vermont in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Union supplanted Minnesota from the top spot. The Gophers (25-6-6) lost to Ohio State, 3-1, in the Big Ten Conference tournament semifinals on Friday. Minnesota received 18 first-place votes and 955 points.

This is the final USCHO/NCAA poll of the regular season. The next poll will be released after the Frozen Four in April.
