Union-Colgate ECACH championship game pregame report
Good evening from 1980 Rink-Herb Brooks Arena, where history will be made tonight as Union faces Colgate in the ECAC Hockey tournament championship game.
The top-seeded and second-ranked Dutchmen (27-6-4) are looking to become just the third team in league history to win three straight Whitelaw Cups. It hasn’t been done since Boston University won four in a row from 1974-77. Cornell was the first to do it (1967-70).
The second-seeded and 14th-ranked Raiders (20-12-5) are seeking their first tournament title since 1990, which was also the last time they made the final. That year, they beat RPI. Colgate would reach the NCAA title game, falling to Wisconsin.
In Friday’s semifinals, Union defeated Cornell, 5-2. Cole Ikkala, Kevin Sullivan, Max Novak, Mike Vecchione and Daniel Carr.
Colgate overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Quinnipiac, 3-2, in double overtime on Tyson Spink’s goal at 58 seconds of the second OT. Kyle Baun sent the game into OT when he scored with 56 seconds left in regulation.
The Raiders took the season series from the Dutchmen. They were the only team not to lose to Union in ECACH play. In the first meeting Nov. 8 at Messa Rink, Darcy Murphy had two goals and an assist to help the Raiders overcome deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to take a 5-3 win. In the Feb. 15 meeting at Starr Rink, it was Union that rallied. The Dutchmen erased 2-0 and 4-2 deficits to earn a 4-4 tie,
This is the third postseason meeting between the two schools. Colgate, which was the 12th seed in 2011, ousted top-seeded Union in three games in the quarterfinals. The following year, Union beat Colgate in the semifinals.
