Union beats Dartmouth in Game 1 of ECAC Hockey quarterfinals
Daniel Carr scored two third-period goals, including one on a penalty shot, lifting Union to a 3-0 victory over Dartmouth in Game 1 of their ECAC Hockey tournament quarterfinals series.
The top-seeded and third-ranked Dutchmen take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. They can wrap up the series and clinch a berth in the championship round in Lake Placid with a win Saturday.
Carr was on a breakaway when he was hauled down by Grant Opperman with 2:37 left. On the penalty shot, Carr skated in and beat Grant to the stick side.
Carr added an empty-net goal 1:11 later.
Union goalie Colin Stevens made 32 saves to post his second straight shutout, and the team's third in a row. It's the first time in the program's Division I history it has posted three straight shutouts.
Michael Pontarelli scored Union's first goal, a power-play tally 1:12 into the second period.
